Development of technical fabrics from foamed rubber waste.

The project consisted in the development of technical fabrics from foamed rubber industry waste.

The residue.

170907 valorizacion tejidos tecnicos caucho 2 1Foamed rubber is commonly closed microcellular cells of rubber foam, although there are also very soft semi-closed rubber cells, which are better suited to the irregularities of surfaces where they are applied. Its mechanical characteristics and resistance to weathering, lubricants, chemical agents or fire, vary depending on its chemical composition or the added additives. These elastomers are used in sealing applications and as dynamic joints (refrigerators, cars, etc.), mainly because of their recovery after being subjected to compression. At the moment, this type of waste is destined in the best cases to energy recovery,  although it is generally disposed of into landfills.

The Technology.

The applied treatment included the following steps:

  • Crushing of the residue.
  • Mixed with a small amount of polyurethane resin.
  • Pressed in a press machine of hot plates to obtain a block.
  • Lamination of the block.

The Product.

The product was developed on a prototype scale and was intended to be used in the belts manufacturing industry.
