Valorisation of the incineration of sewage sludge treatment in bulk concrete.

The project consisted of replacing one of the concrete components (sand) by ashes derived from the incineration of sewage sludge of waste water treatment plants. The studies performed confirm the effectiveness of resulting concrete, which behaves similarly to conventional concretes.

The project was led by a company called Comsa and counted on the collaboration of Promsa Ciments Molins, S.A., the Catalan Water Agency, UPC, and ZICLA.

The residue.

Every year, thousands of tons of sludge are generated from urban sewage treatment plants, which eventually end up in agriculture due to the presence of heavy metals, and they are landfilled or incinerated. The project opened the door to an alternative application of ashes coming from the incineration of these sludges.

The Result.

The result of the project was a concrete that would incorporate the ash from the incineration of sewage sludge in its composition, with all the quality guarantees required for the product,  both technical and environmental.
