Market for recycled construction products.

The construction sector, including both civil engineering and buildings, is a very important sector as a potential consumer of recycled products. It is a sector that has a great impact on the environment. According to various studies, the construction sector:

  • Consumes 60% of raw material extraction from the lithosphere.
  • Is responsible for 50% of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
  • Generates approximately 1.1 tonnes of waste per person/year, 97% of which is currently taken to controlled landfill, without any kind of recovery.

This is a complex sector involving many agents, including:

  • Recommenders: architects, quantity surveyors, engineers etc.
  • Public and private developers.
  • Construction companies.
  • Suppliers of materials.
  • Public authorities.

Diagnosis of the market for recycled products.

mercado de productos recicladosZICLA was commissioned by the Catalan Waste Agency to carry out this project, with the aim of making a diagnosis of the market for recycled products for the construction sector in Catalonia.

 

 

 

 

Supply of recycled construction products.

This diagnosis included the description and characterisation of the supply of recycled products available on the Catalan, Spanish and European markets and identified products, manufacturers and distributors.

Agents of demand.

An analysis was also made of the agents involved in the demand for recycled products for the construction sector, as well as the criteria used when choosing products. Work was done to identify the barriers limiting the purchase of recycled products by companies and local authorities.

The result.

The project made it possible to identify around 50 recycled products for the construction sector on the market at the time.

The project suggested that the Catalan Waste Agency should act on the following four fronts:

  • Networking actions.
  • Publicity actions.
  • Technical actions.
  • Training actions.
