Recovering WWTP sludge. Development of prefabricated concrete items incorporating dried wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) sludge.

The project is based on the application of sewage sludge technology making it possible to include heat-dried sludge from wastewater treatment plants in cement mixtures used to manufacture prefabricated concrete. This technology was the result of a research project developed by the UPC with the support of the Catalan Water Agency and the companies ACYCSA and Taller de Ingenierías, S.A. The project focused on the development of a line of concrete slabs incorporating dried sludge as an additive to the cement used.
The project is an example of how a continuously generated waste that is difficult to manage can be recovered and transformed into a quality product with value (upcycling).
