The purpose of the project was to seek industrial applications for the fraction of high-quality plastic – basically PVC – used to manufacture electric cables.
The project focused on the plastic materials generated in the classical recycling process for waste electric cables. Waste managers have traditionally only been interested in recovering the metals present in the cable. The increase in volume of this waste and rising landfill costs have led the sector to seek alternative solutions. Although the quality of the plastics generated is high, because the cable waste received at management facilities is very diverse, they are mixed. This meant it was necessary, as part of the project, to look for applications for using these mixed plastic fractions.
